Infiniti . How to Replace a 3500 Chevy Truck BeltReplacing the belt on a 3500 Chevy truck requires a different routing process for different model-years. The 3500 Chevy truck comes equipped with the following engines: 4.3 liter, 4.8 liter, 5.0 liter, 5.3 liter, 5.7 liter, 6.0 liter, 6.2 liter, 6.6 liter, 7.4 liter and 8.1 liter. Each engine has a different belt routing process. The key is to know which way the belt is routed and where the belt tensioner is located. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set 1/2-inch drive pull bar Step by Step : 1 Pop the hood and locate the belt routing diagram on top of the fan shroud. If there is no belt routing diagram, take a pen and notepad and draw out the exact direction in which the belt is routed across the pulleys. 2 Locate the belt tensioner. The belt tensioner on the 4.3, 5.0 and 5.7 liter is located directly below the alternator. The belt tensioner on the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 and 6.2 liter is on the top front of the engine directly to the left of the idler pulley. The belt tensioner on the 6.5 liter is located on the front center part of the engine, and the belt tensioner on the 6.6 liter engine is located on the far left-hand side of the engine about halfway up. The belt tensioner on the 7.4 liter is located directly below the alternator, and the belt tensioner on the 8.1 liter is directly to the right of the middle water pump pulley. 3 Place the ratchet with the proper-sized socket on the bolt head in the center of the belt tensioner. To relieve the tension on the belt tensioner on all of the engine sizes except the 8.1 liter, turn the belt tensioner clockwise. To relieve the tension on the belt on the 8.1 liter, turn the belt tensioner counterclockwise. 4 Slide the belt off of the belt tensioner then slide the belt off of the remaining pulleys. Pull the belt out of the engine compartment and set it to the side. 5 Place the new belt inside of the engine compartment. Put the belt on the bottom crankshaft pulley first, then follow the belt routing diagram for routing the belt across the remaining pulleys. Leave the belt tensioner for last. This will make it easier for you to put the belt on the belt tensioner with one hand while holding the tensioner with the other. 6 Use the pull bar and socket to relieve the tension off of the belt tensioner pulley. Route the belt on the belt tensioner exactly as shown by the belt routing diagram. Then release the belt tensioner so that the belt tensioner pulley will put the proper amount of tension on the belt. 7 Inspect the belt to make sure that the belt is exactly routed as in the diagram and that the belt is completely seated in the pulleys. 8 Crank the engine and inspect the belt as the engine is running. Make sure that the belt is running evenly on the belt tensioner. Also make sure that the belt stays seated in the pulleys while the engine is running. Turn the engine off and close the hood. Tips & Warnings Even though there are different routing diagrams for the different-sized engines on the 3500 Chevy, the belt replacement process is still easy as long as you have the proper belt routing diagram, and you know where the belt tensioner is. The rest is just following the belt routing directions. If the belt is backwards on any of the pulleys, it will cause the component to run backwards which can cause damage to the component or to the engine.
Infiniti . How to Install a Serpentine Belt on a Chevy S10 PickupThe 1994-2003 Chevy S-10 pickups have the same serpentine belt-routing process. The serpentine belt is one complete belt that controls all of the accessory pulleys on the front of the engine. Once the serpentine belt breaks, it causes all of the accessories on the engine to stop working. The serpentine belt on the 1994-2003 Chevy S-10 pickup can be replaced in just a matter of minutes. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 3/8-inch drive pull bar Notepad Pen New belt Step by Step : 1 Open the hood and locate the serpentine belt tensioner. The belt tensioner is what keeps the tension on the belt so that the belt does not come off of the pulleys. The belt tensioner is located directly below the alternator. The tensioner has a 3/8-inch square opening right below the pulley on the tensioner. 2 Locate the serpentine belt-routing diagram on the top of the fan shroud above the radiator. The diagram will be a drawing of the serpentine belt being routed around the pulleys. If you cant find a serpentine belt diagram, take a pen and notepad and draw out the exact direction that the serpentine belt is routed across the pulleys and the tensioner. 3 Slide the 3/8-inch drive pull bar into the square opening on the belt tensioner. Turn the belt tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension off of the belt. 4 Slide the belt off of the belt tensioner with your other hand. Let the tensioner go back to its normal spot. Finish removing the serpentine belt from the remaining pulleys. Pull the belt out and set it to the side. 5 Slide the belt in and put the belt around the crankshaft pulley first. Then, follow the belt-routing diagram for routing the belt across the remaining pulleys. Be sure to leave the belt tensioner for last. This is so it will be easier for you to slide the belt on the tensioner while holding the tensioner over. 6 Slide the 3/8-inch drive bar back into the square opening on the belt tensioner. Turn the belt tensioner clockwise. Slide the belt over the top of the belt tensioner. Release the belt tensioner so that it tensions against the belt. The tensioner will hold the proper tension against the belt. 7 Inspect the belt to make sure it is routed the exact way that the diagram shows. Also, inspect to be sure the belt is completely seated into the pulleys. 8 Crank the engine. While the engine is running, go back and inspect the belt again to make sure that the belt is running evenly over the belt tensioner and that the belt remains seated inside of the pulleys. 9 Turn off the engine and close the hood. Tips & Warnings If you have trouble getting the belt onto the crankshaft pulley from the top, route the belt over the crankshaft pulley from under the front side of the engine. Always remove the keys from the ignition before working around the front of the engine to avoid accidental cranking. Do not let the pull bar touch either of the battery posts. This will cause a short and sparks will fly. If you want to be safer, remove the positive battery cable before starting the serpentine belt replacement process. *14. Return to the instructions on checking drum brakes and pick up where you left off. .^ ^"~~ You'll be glad to know that your rear wheels have no wheel bearings to pack (unless your vehicle has front-wheel drive and the manual says that you can repack the rear bearings). You do have axle bearings, but you must replace these if they wear out; you can't repack them. If your car is quite old and you hear a clicking or grinding noise from the vicinity of your rear wheels, have these bearings checked and replaced if necessary. Hearing worn axle bearings is easiest when you drive down an alley or a narrow driveway because the noise echoes loudly. Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System A quick Way to tell Whether your bearing's Wearing If you just want to check your bearings for wear without removing the wheels, do the following: 1. Jack up your car and support it on safety stands. If you've been checking your brakes, your car is already jacked up; if 859

Flushing and Changing Brake Fluid If, after checking your brake system, you find that you have a leak or you have to bleed your brakes (see the section "Bleeding your brakes" for more information), you'll have to restore the brake fluid in your master cylinder to its proper level. Here are some things that you should know about buying and using brake fluid: 0 Always use top-quality brake fluid from a well-known manufacturer. Most vehicles call for either D.O.T. 3 or D.O.T. 4 fluid. Sometimes the type of fluid to use is listed on the master cylinder reservoir cover or cap. * Exposure to air swiftly contaminates brake fluid. The oxygen in the air oxidizes it and lowers its boiling point. Brake fluid also has an affinity for moisture, and the water vapor in the air can combine with the brake fluid to form ice crystals that make braking difficult in cold weather. Adding water vapor-contaminated fluid to your brake system can rust the system and create acids that etch your wheel cylinders and master cylinder and foul your brakes, causing them to work poorly — or not at all. Therefore, if you're going to add brake fluid to your system, buy a small can, add the fluid to your master cylinder, and throw the rest away, Infiniti . If you keep a can with only a little fluid left in it, the air that fills up the rest of the space in the can contaminates the fluid, no matter how quickly you recap it. Keep brake fluid away from painted surfaces — if eats paint. (If this stuff seems scary, remember that the same statements can be made about turpentine and nail polish remover.) You should flush and replace the fluid in your brake system every two years. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Use an old turkey baster, or a cheap plastic one, to remove the old, dirty fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. 2. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe out the reservoir, if possible. Infiniti .
